ALL, PLEASE READ:
We are pleased to return to Bert Adams Scout Reservation for the second year after being away for several years. The camp is a beautiful property that offers a mixture of open fields and woods. The contours are rolling without extreme elevation changes.
We appreciate the Atlanta Area Council of the Boy Scouts of American (BSA) for allowing us to again use the property as an orienteering meet venue. Please assist us in thanking them by observing camp etiquette regarding restroom facilities:
Restroom facilities are not only segregated by sexes but also by youth and adult. Youth participants are defined as girls and boys under 18 years of age. The locations of restroom facilities will be noted at the meet registration area. The men's restroom will have separate facilities for men and boys. Similarly, the women's restroom will have separate facilities for women and girls. Please be sure to observe this separation which is done in accordance with BSA youth protection policies and procedures. We ask that all leaders of youth groups attending the meet instruct the members of your organization regarding these procedures.
Scout Leaders:
White, Yellow X and Yellow Y courses are all sufficiently long to fulfill first class and orienteering merit badge requirements. We ask that troop leaders complete the first class measurement requirement or the merit badge reporting requirements with your own scouts as well as documenting their accomplishments (signing books or blue cards). The meet co-directors are experienced scouters and are willing to assist as time permits, but our first obligation is to the progress of the meet.
First Class Requirement 2:
Using a map and compass, complete an orienteering course that covers at least one mile and requires measuring the height and/or width of designated items (tree, tower, canyon, ditch, etc.)
Merit Badge Requirement 7:
Take part in three orienteering events. One of these must be a cross-country course.
After each event, write a report with
- a copy of the master map and control description sheet,
- a copy of the route you took on the course,
- a discussion of how you could improve your time between control points, and
- a list of your major weaknesses on this course . Describe what you could do to improve.
From Atlanta, take I-20 East to Exit 88, Porterdale. Turn right at the top of the ramp. Follow Almon Rd. (becomes Crowell Rd., then Rt. 653) South for 5.8 miles. Turn right onto Flat Shoals Rd and follow Flat Shoals 3.4 miles to Rt. 36. Turn right and travel south for 3.1 miles. Turn right on Boy Scout Road. The Camp entrance is .4 mile on the right.
