Flowing south from Forsyth County, Vickery Creek formed on the property of a mixed-blood Cherokee woman named Sharlot Vickery. She was forced to move west with the rest of the Cherokee Nation when Georgia removed them on the forced march known today as the "Trail of Tears.

Roswell Mill Dam is a 30-foot dam and millrace that was constructed on Vickery Creek by Roswell King to supply power for the Roswell mills. The Roswell Manufacturing Company was incorporated in 1839.

In July 1864 Union general William T. Sherman's troops arrived in Roswell seeking a way to cross the Chattahoochee River and gain access to Atlanta. As part of the Atlanta campaign, Sherman approved the destruction of the mills and ordered the more than 400 mill workers, mostly women, to be charged with treason and sent to the North as prisoners. They and their children were taken by wagon to Marietta, imprisoned, and subsequently put on railroad boxcars to Kentucky and Indiana with a few days' worth of rations.
