We're having a Sprint and a Relay on a real Sprint map! This map was the site of the US Sprint Champs in 2012. We're also having our Annual General Membership meeting (AGM) and a potluck picnic.

The Sprint is about 3k long, and emphasizes fast decision making on a complex and detailed map. The course will loop through the start/finish area so that spectators can watch. Individual starts beginning at about 10AM (or as soon as we are ready). Blank maps available for inspection and instruction (1:4000 scale, 2.5 meter contours, special sprint symbols).

The Relay is a 4 leg relay for 1-4 runners. A team of 4 can each run one leg, or fewer runners can divide the legs as they wish, or one runner can do all the legs. The relay legs are 2.2k, 2.0k, 1.8k, 1.6k. Each relay leg has a start, a number of controls, and a finish - then the next runner is "tagged" and does a start, controls, and a finish. And so forth until done.

The Relay is a mass start at high noon. There are spectator controls on all legs. Runners will be zipping across the map in all directions. Fast decision making and the ability to orienteer without getting distracted will be needed! Should be great fun for the spectators! Since it is a mass start, the first team to finish (without errors) is the winner.

Relay sign-up - there will be a paper form to fill out at the event, listing the team members and their epunch numbers.

White Course - the Sprint course is also available all day to run as a white course. Think navigating a campus map is easy? Prove it!

Clothing, shoes - wear shorts. Cleats are probably not a good idea - lots of sidewalks, paved areas, and mowed lawns - wear running shoes.

Cost - one fee for all day - no extra charge for running multiple courses.

Online registration should be available soon.

Awards! There will be awards for first place Sprint and first place Relay team.

Parking and address: 206 University Drive, Carrollton, GA 30117. This is the University Community Center, and we will be behind it on the deck. The street ends in a bus turnaround. The UCC is the round building. There is a parking lot to the left - we can park anywhere that doesn't have a "parking enforced 24 hours" sign.

Food - Club is cooking hot dogs - bring something to share - I will bring hobo beans...

AGM - We'll have our annual meeting after the relay - there is an indoor space we can use if needed.

Sprint Map Details

Thick black lines are used to represent barriers that cannot be crossed. On the UWG map, these are high walls that are mapped as cliffs, either with or without tag lines You cannot cross these. Walls that can be crossed are mapped light gray.

Yellow-Green is forbidden to cross. A Sprint map has the usual green colors, but an additional yellow-green color that is used for landscaped areas on the UWG map. I intended that runners should stay out of those areas. The baseball diamond in the NW corner of the map is this color.

Buildings are dark gray, not black. The contours show through the buildings, so that you can see the outline of the terrain that would be there if the building were removed. This is helpful on a Sprint map, since the buildings are usually large.

Canopies are light gray. A canopy is a roofed structure that you can run under or through. On the UWG map, there are large buildings that have a "pass through" that is mapped in light gray - you can run through these instead of all the way around the building. Also, elevated walkways that you can run under or on top of are mapped in light gray - this means there are two levels (upper and lower) on the map.

Special symbols on the UWG map:
Green X A large magnolia tree
Green O A large deciduous tree (like an oak)
Black X A sculpture or unidentified art object (UAO)
Black O A large electrical transformer or HVAC unit

Do not open a door to pass through a building.

Small objects like small AC units are not mapped. Light poles are not mapped. Steps are mapped, and should be obvious.
