If you have only been to Cochran Mill for the night-o, then you're in for a surprise. We will be starting from the picnic shelter in the parking lot and running across the road into the east section of the park - this is where most of the old mills were, and you can still see the ruins, the old dams, and 3 waterfalls.
But the big news is - we will have Sprint and Middle distance courses! This is the format used for the US Champs (except we will not have a long).
The White and Yellow courses will be as usual.
Orange, Brown, Green and Red will be Middle distance and complexity.
And there will be a Sprint course.
So the idea is that you can run both the Sprint and the color course of your choosing, in whatever order you want. Come early, run often!
If you have never done a Sprint course, the difficulty is Yellow/Orange. The challenge is in navigating at high speed. The map will be 1:5000 with 2.5 meter contours. I hope the winning time will be about 12-15 minutes.
The Middle course stresses technically difficult orienteering, and is shorter than the classic distance. Hopefully the fastest times will be about 30 minutes. The map is 1:10000 with 2.5 meter contours.
The course distances are very similar to what we had at the US Champs last year.
We will be using e-punch - the online registration should be up soon. Register for the course of your choice - your second course will be an extra course at no extra charge.
In the unlikely event that we overflow the parking lot on Sunday, I now have the key to the gravel road that leads to the big field. We will have overflow parking down the gravel road somewhere and not on the shoulder of Cochran Mill Road.
I hope we have a large enough crowd to make that happen! Weather looks perfect and the woods are beautiful.
Hope to see you there!
Due to a short term problem with our insurance carrier, everyone who is NOT a member of OUSA MUST fill out a special temporary membership form to participate. Please print out, fill in and bring a copy of this form to the event for each participant. We will have extra forms at the event, but doing this ahead of time will save a lot of time and trouble for everyone else there. Thanks for being helpful.
