This year's night orienteering event at Dauset Trails will be on Saturday, October 24. We will be at the bike trail parking area, which is just west of the main entrance to Dauset Trails.

Rules for this year's Night-O have been modified because of the pandemic. Notably, the Night-O will NOT be a mass start event. Also, there will be NO food served. Further, we will use a different tiebreaker this year....see below. The maximum group size is increased to 3 for this event.

Preregistration will be similar to how we've been doing it for prior events this fall, and will be open Monday evening for coupon holders and Tuesday evening for everyone else. Preregistration and prepayment are required. E-sticks are required, and will not be available for rental. (A few e-sticks are available for purchase on our merchandise page). Registrants will choose start times when registering. Start times will extend from 3:30pm to 8pm, every 3 minutes. The time limit for finishing is 3 hours from your selected start time or 9pm, whichever is earlier. Participants will need to follow all the pandemic rules as stated in the GAOC Pandemic Rules.

All controls are worth one point each, and are a mix of intermediate and advanced controls. There is a total of 25 controls that can be punched in any order. One reasonable route going to all 25 controls results in a 5.7k course with 140m of climb. Exceeding the time limit will result in a 1 point penalty plus an additional 1 point penalty for every 5 minutes you are out past your time limit. The most points wins, with a maximum score of 25.

To encourage orienteers to select a start time such that they at least get to do some night orienteering, the TIEBREAKER will go to the orienteer with the LATEST start time. The latest starter who gets the most points wins. This is different than past years in which the tie breaker was based on fastest time. Elapsed time is irrelevant for scoring this year, other than for determining overtime penalties. Orienteers will not be allowed to start early, and if you show up late your official start time will not be changed. So, the start time you select will serve as the basis for determining your tiebreaker position....select it wisely.

Notes:

  1. In accordance with GAOC Covid Guidelines, there will be no equipment rental of any kind for the event. Water will NOT be provided on any course. Participants must bring their own compass, e-stick, whistle, and water. A few e-sticks are available for purchase on our merchandise page.
  2. Participants will be started promptly at their selected start time. So that we comply with limits on the number of people at the park at the same time, please arrive at the parking area no earlier than 20 minutes before your start time, and leave the parking area within 15 minutes of finishing your course. To facilitate social distancing, please come to the start no earlier than 3 minutes before your start time, but be sure to be at the start on time.
  3. To maintain the health and safety of all participants and volunteers during the COVID-19 pandemic, GAOC is implementing special rules for event participants. Please review and follow the GAOC Pandemic Rules.
  4. Pre-paid preregistration is required. (Registration will open for coupon holders only at 8:00pm on Monday, October 19th. Registration will open to everyone at 8:00pm on Tuesday, October 20th.) No paper forms or payments will be accepted on-site.
