On February 13, GAOC will be holding an open public meet which will be held at the Bert Adams Scout Reservation. GAOC access to the reservation is at the courtesy of the Atlanta Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. This 1,300 acre property includes both wooded and open terrain, including buildings. (NOTE 2 special announcements at the end of this information.)
Since the meet will be held at a BSA facility, we encourage scout packs, troops, or crews to attend. Although this is strictly not a BSA event, GAOC members, who are also scout leaders, will be available to sign advancement and merit badge accomplishments, as time allows. Beginner (White) and novice (Yellow) courses will be available and are greater than 1-mile, as per first class and merit badge requirements. No water is being provided on the course. Scouts should have adequate clothing for the weather conditions, a water bottle, and at least one compass per buddy group. Since this meet is being conducted at the courtesy of the Atlanta Area Council, e-stick rental is available to scout groups/units only, since they are not likely to have them.
WHEN ARRIVING AT THE MEET, PLEASE NOTIFY THE MEET OFFICIAL, IF YOU ARE ATTENDING AS A SCOUTING UNIT.
Registrants will be assigned start times by the online registration process. All participants are expected back within 3 hours of their start time or 3:00 pm, whichever comes first.
NEAR PERSON CONTACT IS BEING MINIMIZED. PLEASE REFRAIN FROM CONGREGATING NEAR THE START AREAS.
Follow the main access road into the camp and drive directly (no turns) back to the Arnold Pavilion and parking area. No parking fee is required. If you travel to BASR by driving through Porterdale, please note speed limits.
Standard meet fees apply as posted on the GAOC web site. Members are $7, Associate and Non-members are $10. Electronic punch (e-punch) will be used. E-punch rental is available only for BSA troop members for $3. These fees are per start, so small groups going together with one map will only pay one entry and E-punch fee. (All participants, however, must have a waiver, see below.) No parking fee is required.
PLEASE NOTE: In order to participate in any GAOC event, ALL participants MUST complete a Waiver of Responsibility. For youth under the age of 18, the Waiver of Responsibility MUST be signed by their own Parent or Legal Guardian. It is NOT sufficient that the Waiver of Responsibility be signed by any other adult such as a scout leader, coach, teacher or chaperone. Please access the gaorienteering.org web site and complete the waiver for ALL participants. Waivers need to be completed by the participant or their parent or legal guardian ONLINE. Complete the online waiver form here by joining GAOC as an Associate Member for free.
PLEASE NOTE: Special considerations for those attending the meet are that BSA youth protection guidelines will be observed for restroom facilities. Not only are restrooms segregated by sex, but also by age (17 and younger vs. 18 and older). The four facilities are youth boys, adult men, youth girls and adult women. Leaders of non-scouting youth groups are expected to inform your members to observe these age related requirements. We are guests at this camp, so please be courteous about following these rules and keeping the facilities clean.
To maintain the health and safety of all participants and volunteers during the COVID-19 pandemic, GAOC is implementing special rules for event participants. Please review and follow the GAOC Pandemic Rules.
