Moore's Bridge, Sunday, April 23rd, 2023

Join us this Sunday, April 23rd at Moore’s Bridge for an Orienteering change-of-pace with a Score-O event.

Primary courses offered will be a 60-minute and a 90-minute Score-O event. The 90 Minute Score-O will have a mass start at 9:30 AM, and the 60 Minute Score-O will have a mass start at 9:45 AM. For those unfamiliar, a Score-O event has a start, finish, and control point locations identified, but no pre-determined route; you determine the controls you will visit and in what order. Each control will have a point value identified on the clue sheet with the more difficult and/or distant points generally garnering more points. The person with the most points in the shortest amount of time is the winner. The caveat is the time limit; runners must return within the chosen course time limit or receive a penalty of 5 points for each minute or portion of minute which they are "over-time." (i.e. if you are 1.5 minutes over time, you will be assessed a 10 point penalty).

Yellow, Orange, and Brown courses will also be available. Runners on these courses will select their start times (between 1000 AM and noon) when registering and will have a 2-hour time limit.

Ticks and Chiggers are back. Plan accordingly by wearing long sleeves and pants and plenty of bug spray with a good wipe-down after you run.

Notes

  1. 1. Each Score-O event will be limited to 75 participants. Runners for each Score-O group will assemble at the start area 10-minutes prior to their scheduled start. Maps will be distributed 5 minutes prior to event start time to allow runners to plan their routes. A shotgun start will occur at the chosen start time; no start box will be used as runner times will start automatically. Runner times will end when they return to the finish area (control box).
  2. 2. Arrive early as parking is limited; car pool if possible. There is a $5 parking fee; bring cash. Please support the park.
  3. 3. There will be no equipment rental for the event. Water will NOT be provided on any course. Participants must bring their own compass, e-stick, whistle, and water.
  4. 4. Pre-paid pre-registration is required. (Registration will open for our volunteer meet directors at 8:00pm on Monday, April 17th, and will open for other volunteer coupon holders at 8:30pm on Monday, April 17th. Registration will open to everyone at 9:00pm on Monday, April 17th.) No paper forms or payments will be accepted on-site.

Directions

From the traffic circle in Whitesburg (the intersection of GA5 and GA16), go north on GA 5 (the opposite direction from McIntosh Reserve) for about a mile and turn right on Black Dirt Road. The park will be down about a mile on the right. There is a sign at the entrance.

The park address is 615 Black Dirt Rd, Whitesburg, GA. This is a Carroll County Park like McIntosh Reserve, and it is not very well known, so your GPS may not know about this park or address.

The only facilities in this park are a restroom (with flush toilets!) and a boat ramp. We will start and finish at the restroom parking lot.
