MotalaA Motala event is characterized by a series of short courses, run one after the other. After each course, the participant returns to the start and exchanges maps. This format is useful for smaller parks, where the number of control locations is limited. You will see other controls while on a course, but you will not know if that control is even on a later course, or from which direction you will be approaching. Motalas generally have mass starts and have participants run the loops in different order to add to the confusion. We will use mini-mass starts whenever we get enough people to go.

Generally, a Motala can be 1-, 2-, or 3-loops. You need to declare at the Registration how many loops you think you will do. These will be A, B and C loops and they will be randomized between competitors. At the map exchange station, simply punch the numbered control, exchange your old map for a new one, and immediately begin your next loop. The numbered control will allow us to calculate your total time for each loop. DO NOT FORGET TO PUNCH AT EACH MAP-EXCHANGE STATION, as your score will be reported as a DNF if you forget.

THOMASSA THOMASS event is characterized by having a set of controls in SCORE format as part of a regular orienteering course. These are generally referred to as being in the THOMASS box. We will be using the simplest format whereby the course will start with 15 score controls and progress to a regular 2k or so sprint finish. The SCORE element can be Short (Brown), Medium (Green) or Long (Red) by selecting any 6, 9 or 12 of the 15 controls, then progressing to the sprint finish. Generally, this is best done with mass starts, and we will do that if we have sufficient numbers.
