The 2011 Georgia Navigator Cup & Southeast Interscholastic Champs A-Meet has been rescheduled for March 19-20 at Richard B. Russell State Park. Registration will be open from January 24 – March 11 and is available to prior registrants, new registrants, and up to 15 students per school in the interscholastic classes.

While GAOC was disappointed that inclement weather forced our January event to cancel, we’re excited that offering the event in early spring gives more orienteers the opportunity to attend. Georgia Navigator Cup

The Georgia Navigator Cup is a United States Orienteering Federation (Orienteering USA) sanctioned Class “A” Orienteering event in USOF Classic format hosted by the Georgia Orienteering Club. Competitive participants who are USOF/OUSA members will earn points toward the annual USOF/OUSA National Competitive Rankings. This event is being conducted using USOF Rules, guidelines and common practices of US A-meets with GAOC enhancements. Participants must provide their own compasses, clothing, and gear. Courses will be pre-printed on maps provided by the organizers. Control Descriptions will be printed on the maps as well as included in the meet packet.

Southeast Interscholastic Championships

The Southeast Interscholastic Orienteering Championships (SEIS) will be based on 2-day total finish times. Competitions will be held in Individual SEIS categories and Team SEIS categories.

   • SEIS School Junior Varsity Team 3-5 students (M-ISJV and/or F-ISJV on Orange)
   • SEIS School Intermediate Team 3-5 students (M-ISI and/or F-ISI on Yellow)

Due to the change in schedule, we regret that the Extreme-O has been cancelled. We will process refunds if you previously registered for this event.

Map Hiking

Non-competitive map hiking is offered on Saturday and Sunday from 11am – 1pm. White and Yellow courses will be offered to map hikers. Registration, Start, and Finish for map hikers will be conducted in the vicinity of the meet headquarters site each day. There is a three hour limit on the course. Map Hikers keep track of their own times, but ALL map hikers will be required to check back in at the Map Hike table whether they finish the course or not. Map Hikers do not go thru the competitive Finish chute.

Model Event

Non-competitive model event maps will be available at meet HQ Friday after 12 noon. Fee will be $3 per map, payable on site.

Golf and Disc Golf

Russell State Park contains an 18-hole regular golf course, Arrowhead Pointe. There is also a 27-basket disc golf course ($2/day, pay at park office). Bring your own frisbees or buy one at the park office. Playing these courses will not violate the course embargo as long as you stay on the golf course and don't explore the woods.

Directions

From the intersection of GA Hwy 77 & GA Hwy 72 in Elberton, Georgia, go 1.2 miles north on GA Hwy 77 and turn right onto Ruckersville Rd., go 8 miles to Park on right. Elberton is 35 miles East of Athens, GA via GA Hwy 72 and 30 miles South of I-85 exit 177 (first GA exit) via GA Hwy 77. Allow 2.5 hours to drive from Atlanta airport. Follow signs in the Park to meet HQ at the Lakeside Pavilion.

About Richard B. Russell State Park

Russell State Park consists of approx. 2,500 acres and is located on a peninsula surrounded by Lake Russell. The park, lake and dam were named after Richard B. Russell, former Georgia Governor and U.S. Senator. Several Indian sites were excavated near the park in 1980 before the lake was filled, indicating that Paleo-Indians lived in the area more than 10,000 years ago. Park website

Map

Courses and control descriptions are pre-drawn on the maps. Each competitor will be given a map, placed in a plastic bag at the Start’s Map line. The Richard B. Russell State Park Map is Piedmont, Ridge and Reentrant old cropland with numerous gully systems, mixed pine and oak forest. The scale is 1:10,000 for White through Green and 1:15,000 for Red and Blue. The contour interval is 3 meters and size is: 7 km².

Saturday & Sunday Courses

USOF standard color courses White, Yellow, Orange, Brown, Green, Red and Blue will be offered. If pre-registration necessitates it, we'll have 2 Yellow and Orange courses. If you're not sure which course you want, there's a great explanation, click here.

Start Times

First Starts will be approx.10am on Saturday and 9am on Sunday. Start Times will be posted on the GAOC website one week prior to the event. Competitors must arrive at the Start Call-up line 5 minutes before their Start times. The walk to the Start will be under 15 minutes and will be marked by streamers from meet HQ.

Parking

Georgia DNR Parking Passes are required and may be purchased at packet pickup, from the self-serve boxes in the parking lots, or the park office. Rates are charged based on vehicle capacity, not the number of actual passengers. Cars and vans with 1-12 passenger capacity are $5/day. School Buses on official school trips may park free. Other 13+ passenger vehicles MUST stop by the Park Office to pay for their parking. Please ensure your pass is affixed to your rear view mirror or you will run the risk of getting a parking ticket. You may pick up your packets at meet HQ on Friday without a parking pass as long as you do not stay in the park afterward.

Buses and overflow parking will be in the large parking lot at the beach area.

Packets

Packets may be picked up Friday after noon or Saturday morning at meet HQ.

Lunches & Hot Drinks

Lunches on Saturday and Sunday are provided by the Stockbridge High School Navy JROTC at meet HQ. Pre-order lunches when you register for the event.

Free hot chocolate and coffee will be provided at the meet HQ for everyone.

T-Shirts

If you previously ordered and paid for a t-shirt, it will be available at packet pick-up. If you are registering for the first time, we have a limited number of t-shirts available on a first-come, first-served basis in the following sizes: (XXL, XL, L, M, S). View T-shirt design.

Electronic Punching

GNC 2011 will have Electronic Punching using the SportIdent system for the Saturday and Sunday main competition. Each participant (except Map Hike) will be required to have an SI Ecard (finger stick). If you own an Ecard, indicate the Ecard number on your registration. If you do not own an Ecard, you must rent one for $2/day, reserve one when you register for the event. Participants who lose or damage a rental Ecard will be charged a $40 replacement cost. The same card must be used for both Saturday and Sunday. School coaches are encouraged to monitor their teams’ rental Ecards. For info on how to use Epunching, see our primer in PDF, click here.

Rental Ecards will be supplied with an attached pink “leash” and cord-lock. Rental Ecards must be worn with the leash and cord-lock tightened around the wrist as illustrated. The Ecard itself can be worn on either hand on any finger, but not on the thumb. We have found that, if properly secured, the loss of an Ecard on the course is minimized.

Southeast Interscholastics (SEIS)

Registration instructions for school coaches and SEIS Instructors

When registering school children, the contact information should be for the coach or instructor. This includes the mailing address (generally the school address), phone number and email address. This contact information is needed for emergencies, announcements, confirmations and sending waiver forms, all of which should be sent to the coach or instructor. Entering the same contact information for each child also has the same great advantage that the fields will auto-fill after they have been filled in the first time, making registration much faster.

Coaches and instructors should also register for the event, even if not competing. If not competing, the only real trick is to just enter 0 (zero) for the ePunch number.

Each school may field a maximum of 15 students in the SEIS competition. Additional students may compete in the Open Georgia Navigator Cup.

SEIS School Teams

1. Members must be enrolled full-time at the same private or public accredited school one of these states - North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, or Tennessee. Varsity teams consist of 3-5 members from M-ISV and/or F-ISV classes. Junior Varsity teams consist of 3-5 members from M-ISJV and/or F-ISJV classes. Intermediate teams consist of 3-5 members from M-ISI and/or F-ISI classes.
2. Members must meet the eligibility requirements for Individuals in the SEIS competition.

SEIS JROTC Teams

1. JROTC teams competing only for the JROTC trophy must be made up of students who are enrolled in the same JROTC unit in accordance with the host military service requirements in one of these states - North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, or Tennessee. Members shall consist of 3 to 5 students who are registered in M ISV and/or F ISV classes.
2. JROTC teams may compete for the Interscholastic School Varsity team competition if they meet the school team requirements.
3. Members must meet the eligibility requirements for Individuals in the SEIS competition.

SEIS Individuals

To win individual awards competitors must be competing in one of the SEIS classes and must be a full time student attending an accredited school one of these states - North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, or Tennessee.

Individual competition will be held for each of the 8 interscholastic classes.

• F ISV - Varsity Female (Brown)
• M ISJV – Jr. Varsity Male (Orange)
• F ISJV – Jr. Varsity Female (Orange)
• M ISI - Intermediate Male (Yellow)

Each individual starter shall receive a calculated elapsed time or an incomplete designation (DNF, MP, and OT). The winning individuals are determined by lowest individual combined time over the 2 days competition.

Scoring

Team Score

Scoring for team awards in two Interscholastic Team Categories, School Varsity and JROTC will be done as follows:

• For each interscholastic class, define AWT (the average winning time) as the average of the times of the top three competitors in that class who are competing in a team category.
• For each competitor in each class with a valid result, their score is computed as 60*(competitor’s time)/ (AWT for the class).
• For competitors with an OT, MP, DNF or DSQ result, their score will be the larger of 10+60*(course time limit)/ (AWT for the male class) and 10+60*(course time limit)/ (AWT for the female class) for that team category.
• The best three scores each day for each team are combined for a team score.
• Lowest overall team score wins.

Calculation & Display of Scores

For calculation purposes the decimal should be carried as far as the used system will allow.

For display purposes the decimal should be carried one or two places, or as far as necessary to indicate an order or tie. We recommend two decimals be the standard. This would accommodate 10,000 unique individual scores.

Tie Breaking

If two or more scores are exactly the same, break the tie by:

• First – consider the total times. If that fails:
• Second – consider the positions of the teams Fourth members if available. If that fails:
• Third – consider the time of the fourth positions. If that fails:
• Fourth – consider the same as above for the fifth positions. If that fails:
• Fifth – accept the tie. It must be valid.

Note: Changes made to all registrations after March 11 will incur a $10/change fee.

Capacities

USOF standard color courses (White, Yellow, Orange, Brown, Green, Red and Blue) will be offered. Each course has a capacity of 90 entries on a first-come basis. If needed, we will have separate Yellow and Orange courses for SEIS. Once this capacity on a course has been reached, no more entries for the course will be accepted.

Registration Deadline

Online registration will be open January 24 - March 11. After March 11, online registration will be removed from the website and closed.

1. Standard registration fees apply through February 28.
2. Late registrations received from March 1 - March 11 will incur a $5 per competition day late registration fee.
3. Requests made after registration closes on March 11 will be considered on a case-by-case basis, and if accepted will be charged $10 per competition day fee in addition to the late fee.

Cancellation Policy

For New Registrants:

• Requests received by March 11 will receive a full refund.
• Requests after March 11 due to hardship will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

For Existing Registrants:

If you previously registered for the January event, we ask that you confirm, cancel, or change your registration by January 31.
