There will be two workshops:
1) 1:00 to 5:00 PM Saturday afternoon: Field Checking Maps Using LIDAR
2) 8:00 to 10:00 PM Saturday evening: “How to Get and Use LIDAR” an Introduction.
Please sign up for these workshops if you want to attend so that there are enough materials for everyone. Sign-up procedure is at the end of this document.

Saturday Afternoon, January 19th - Workshop on Using Basemaps for Making Orienteering Maps

Note: This workshop will be in the afternoon so you can run in the morning and still participate in the workshop. The precise area is to be determined but it will be near where the day’s event is held. The time for the workshop is 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. It may be that you should ask for an early start time Saturday so you can recover from your run.

This is for people new to mapping AND people who want to learn a bit more about the process. Lots of mapping is done alone and this is a chance to talk about what needs to be mapped and how to map it.

At the workshop, attendees will work with a basemap, aerial photos and other data to learn the basics of making field notes with the goal of creating orienteering maps. This will be hands on and materials will be provided for making field notes. The materials provided will be traditional map boards and colored pencils. Map boards will be used in t he workshop because of the issues of getting people with different computer operating systems all on the same page. The advantages (and some disadvantages) of using computers in the field will be discussed. This workshop is intended to show how field notes are taken (which is universal to all field checking) and not dealing with the particular medium that the notes are recorded on. There will be no charge for the workshop although you must pre-register so there are enough materials for all the participants. Email: pgwolfe66 at gmail dot com. You can also send an email if you are interested in getting more information on the workshops.

If you are going to attend the mapping workshop on Saturday afternoon, please indicate this to the registrar when you sign up for your courses (or send an email if you have already registered) to say that you would like an early start so that you can get to the 1:00 start for the workshop.

Saturday January 19th Evening LIDAR Workshop at Hampton Inn Hotel - 8:00 to 10:00 PM

This will be an introduction to what you can get from LIDAR to use in map making. The goal is to allow prospective mappers to see what can be obtained through a LIDAR mapping program and then how to use that in the field. It may be that you don’t want to do the data analysis yourself but you will learn what you can have if you ask someone who will provide the data. Please indicate that you will attend so we have enough seating.
